Gambling addiction is a pathological addiction to gambling and gambling addiction. Uncontrolled trading on the exchange is called cryptocurrency addiction (not to be confused with cryptomania – the tendency to hide thoughts and intentions, to make secrets out of everything), is equated with gambling addiction and is treated with similar methods. How to determine that a person is addicted to cryptocurrencies is described in this material.

How cryptocurrency addiction differs from games of chance

Cryptocurrency trading is accompanied by access to a set of analytical data, which are divided into global analytics and charts. Access to data is open – the Internet is regularly updated with reviews and articles on the prospects for cryptocurrencies. Charts and graphs give a false sense of control that gamblers do not have. The latter press the buttons in the hope of good luck. The trader loses his investment as a result of a false signal or his own failed guess, and the player knows that he is out of luck. The trader returns to trades in the hope of correcting his mistake, and the player hopes to increase the chance of winning with each new approach to roulette.

Sitting at the computer all day, a trader makes a profit or loses money. Such an occupation deprives him of communication with the real world and introduces him into a state of obsession. This is what gamblers strive for. Profit is not so important to them as the repetition of certain actions that induce a state of emotional uplift.

The sports betting niche, like trading, is regularly replenished with new recruits. Sports are one of the most popular topics for discussion, and most people have attended classes or are active amateur athletes. The received minimum amount of knowledge and skills gives the illusion of control over the outcome of various competitions. More advanced analysts study in-depth statistics and use special programs. Both those and others place bets on the basis of the available information, but can only hope for the winnings provided by the odds of the bookmaker’s office. There is no such ceiling in stock trading – it is never known exactly how much profit it can give.

The prospects for trading cryptocurrencies look even brighter, since they have already given thousands of X’s in the shortest possible time. This fact connects crypto trading with the opportunity to get rich without having thousands of dollars at the start. Fiat trading can be compared to cryptocurrency trading as addiction to marijuana and heroin.

Dependence on cryptocurrencies is only a subtype of gambling addiction

The connection between crypto addiction, gambling and sports betting is observed on the forums of gambling addicts. An abbreviated history of one of the users of the ludomah.ru forum is given:

The guy is 26 years old, introduced as Amir. He has a full-fledged family with a one and a half year old daughter, grandmothers, grandfathers and great-grandmothers. The guy is a workaholic from an early age and has been working in a bank for 7 years. Earns 36,000 rubles + additional volatile income. He has been playing poker since he was 17, betting $ 10. At first there were victories, but then a series of defeats followed. The guy blocked all accounts for 5 years and gave up poker.

Then Amir drew attention to a friend who made good money on bets with odds from 1.4 to 2. He tried to place bets for 500 rubles and everything went well until he came across games like a fool, 21, etc. in the same bookmaker. P. I borrowed money from relatives in cryptocurrency (at that time 135,000 rubles + 40,000 of my own) for trading on the exchange. Along the way, studying the crypto world, the guy was looking for algorithms to bypass the logic of the computer in the game “Fool”, but the machine turned out to be smarter. As a result, Amir lost all entrusted money.

Then the forum member sold his car and bought a cryptocurrency to continue trading. He left a part to play in the game “21”. As a result, he leaked everything, including the salary. I had to borrow 15,000 rubles from a friend for living, but they were also lost.

The author of the story writes that he feels completely overwhelmed, demoralized, without a clue of what is happening to him and how to deal with it. Amir has an unpleasant external and internal state, he cannot look his loved ones in the eyes – a complete impasse. He realizes the gravity of what is happening, understands that he must return the family’s money, car and trust. He is even more pressured by the fact that the lost cryptocurrency at the time of writing the post in December 2017 was already worth more than 400,000 rubles.

Symptoms of cryptocurrency trading addiction

Signs differ from the symptoms of gambling addiction only by the object of addiction. Many of the symptoms below also overlap with substance abuse.

Waste of an unreasonable amount of time on cryptocurrency trading channels to the detriment of other activities.
Lack of exercise, poor personal hygiene, and poor nutrition.
Moving away from cryptocurrency trading, anger, mood swings, depression, sleep problems, nervousness appear.
Lies about the frequency and involvement of friends and family in trading.
The emergence of large debts.
Developing poor self-esteem – for example, labeling yourself as a “loser.”
Social isolation, career problems, and the loss of close friends.
At the same time, some symptoms can be logically justified by the patient:

The waste of time is explained by the constant need to monitor the crypto market. There are cases when a person subconsciously wants to look at charts, getting satisfaction from his work, although in many cases it is successfully replaced by stop losses and bots.

Social isolation is due to the need to spend time monitoring the market. Past good relationships with friends are often broken by the patient himself, as he is ashamed of his actions or he feels inferior in the company of successful comrades.

Poor hygiene occurs because there is no reason to look decent – leaving the house is only required to go to the store. With constant losses of money, a person practically does not care how he looks and he also forgets about sports. It is interesting that sports very often help to clear the brain, but the disease seems to specifically repel physical activity.

A person himself can understand that he is sick if he begins to lie. If there is nothing to lie for, then he is either not sick, or admits his addiction. Awareness of the disease almost never comes without the loss of large sums of money.

Cryptocurrency addiction is curable.

In such cases, clinics offer outpatient therapy sessions at least once a week.

Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy is applied to patients. Some patients need to limit the management of their finances and access to trading tools: a computer, telephone, etc. Ultimately, the patient himself must admit that he is sick and develop a new approach to life.
